Punk rock trio with members of famed ’80s and ’90s bands to release new album
    • March 11, 2026

The members of Ultrabomb all hail from notable bands from past decades, but this band is not about nostalgia.

The Minneapolis-born trio, made up of Greg Norton of Hüsker Dü on bass and backing vocals, Derek O’Brien of Social Distortion, Agent Orange and the Adolescents on drums and backing vocals, Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum on lead vocals and guitar, will be releasing its latest album “The Bridges That We Burn,” on May 1.

While the band has been together since 2021 and released a pair of albums with Norton as the main driving force, the current lineup came together a little more than a year ago.

“I think this new Ultrabomb 2.0, the new lineup is really fantastic,” Norton said. “I think I finally found a great writing partner with Ryan Smith and I think this new record shows that. I think it’s one of the best sounding records I’ve ever recorded in my entire career.”

The 11-track album consists of songs that offer high-energy tunes that hint back to 1980s and ’90s punk and alternative rock. Just don’t expect a total flashback record.

“Ultrabomb is not a nostalgia act. We’re not trying to recreate something, not trying to remake a sound that’s 40 years old. We’re writing music for today and I want to keep pushing the sound forward,” Norton said.

“This record definitely has a high punk energy and urgency, and lyrically most of the songs are looking at what’s happening in America and around the world right now. Punk has always been a good spot to raise awareness of current events and I think this record does that,” he added.

A new single, “no cap,” is out now and it’s a melodic, driving anthem with a hook-heavy punch and manic guitar. The title was taken for the youth vernacular for telling the truth.

“When I was writing that it was kind of about being overwhelmed and overthinking things and no cap. I’m at capacity and I can’t take it anymore,” Norton said.

Another standout tune that drives the album is the lead song “Darwin Awards.”

“I wrote that song just about basically the human capacity to do stupid (expletive). Literally we’re all going to be winners of the Darwin Award one way or another,” he said.

“There’s a lot of variety on the record and the songs all work well together. I feel this record came together so well and sounds so good. I feel like things are working,” Norton said.
