Angels add lefty Joey Lucchesi; Kirby Yates among several headed to IL
    • March 25, 2026

LOS ANGELES — The Angels signed left-hander Joey Lucchesi on Tuesday night, and he is expected to be available for Thursday’s season opener against the Houston Astros in Texas.

The Angels made a number of other roster moves on Tuesday, adding infielders Jeimer Candelario and Adam Frazier to their 26-man roster and putting six players on assorted injured lists to create spots on their 26-man and 40-man rosters.

Right-handed starting pitchers Grayson Rodriguez (right shoulder inflammation) and Alek Manoah (right middle finger contusion) and right-handed relievers Ben Joyce (right shoulder inflammation) and Kirby Yates (left knee inflammation) were all moved to the 15-day IL, retroactive to March 22.

Infielder Vaughn Grissom (left wrist sprain) was placed on the 10-day IL, also retroactive to March 22.

Third baseman Anthony Rendon, who is not expected to play this year after left hip labrum surgery, and right-handed reliever Robert Stephenson (right elbow inflammation) were placed on the 60-day IL.

The Angels’ bullpen appeared set to include a pair of left-handers in Drew Pomeranz and Brent Suter. Pomeranz entered Tuesday with a 9.64 ERA in six spring appearances, while Suter had a 7.36 ERA in seven appearances.

Lucchesi, 32, moved into a full-time relief role for the first time last season and was 0-1 with a 3.76 ERA in 38 appearances for the San Francisco Giants. He was back with the Giants on a minor league deal this spring before he was released Sunday.

In seven major league seasons with the San Diego Padres (2018-20), New York Mets (2021-24) and Giants, Lucchesi is 23-27 with a 4.07 ERA in 119 appearances (77 starts).

Left-hander Jayvien Sandridge was designated for assignment.
