Kings salvage a point in shootout loss to Flames
    • March 25, 2026

CALGARY, Alberta — The Kings are trying to stay in the playoff hunt, but they keep walking away from games with one point instead of two.

Yegor Sharangovich scored in the fourth round of a shootout and the Calgary Flames handed the Kings a 3-2 loss on Tuesday night.

Olli Maatta and Zayne Parekh, each with their first goals of the season, scored in regulation time for the Flames, who have won four games in a row for the first time this season. Dustin Wolf stopped 23 shots through overtime and was beaten by only once in the shootout during the comeback victory.

Sharangovich scored the decisive tally when he lost the handle while attempting a deke, but the puck slipped through the legs of Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper’s legs.

Quinton Byfield scored both goals and Kuemper made 21 saves through OT but only two of four in the shootout for the Kings, who have points in seven of their past nine games but just three victories during that stretch. They have lost four straight (three in extra time).

With the loss, the Kings (28-25-18) fell three points behind the Nashville Predators (34-28-9) for the final wild-card berth in the Western Conference with 11 games left in the regular season. Seattle is two points behind the Kings with a game in hand, and San Jose is four points back with two games in hand.

In the first three rounds of the shootout, Morgan Forst scored for Calgary and Artemi Panarin answered for the Kings, who have played a league-high 28 games beyond regulation this season.

Amid a low-event first period, Byfield opened the scoring 2:35 into the game. The winger was sprung on a partial breakaway by Joel Armia on the rush and followed up with a deke and nifty backhand goal.

Calgary (30-34-7) tied the score, 1-1, at 14:50 of the second period when Ryan Strome and Victor Olofsson combined to set up Maatta as the three veterans the Flames added at the trade deadline combined to get Calgary on the scoreboard.

Olofsson’s shot attempt deflected off a defender’s skate directly to Maatta in the right circle, and he quickly fired a shot into the net for his first goal since Feb. 6, 2025, ending a 57-game drought.

Olofsson was part of the Nazem Kadri deal with Colorado. Maatta came over from Utah in the MacKenzie Weegar trade. Strome was picked up from the Ducks for a seventh-round draft pick to replace Kadri at center.

Maatta has one goal and five assists in 10 games with Calgary after recording just a single assist in 22 games with the Mammoth.

Byfield’s second of the night 17 seconds into the third period restored the Kings’ lead. Trevor Moore’s chip pass sent Byfield on a breakaway and he converted a quick shot inside the far post for his fourth goal in as many outings.

However, Parekh tied the score again with his first goal of the season. The rookie defenseman threaded a point shot during a 5-on-3 power play with 6:58 left in the third.
