Oscars 2026: The highlights and top moments according to social media
    • March 16, 2026

It’s Hollywood’s biggest night — and the conclusion of awards season. The 98th annual Academy Awards returned to the Dolby Theatre to celebrate the film industry. Conan O’Brien returned as the host for the evening after hosting the awards last year.

As with most award shows, part of the fun is scrolling social media to see what other viewers are saying, checking out the memes being made and enjoying the highlights from the night.

Here are some of the major moments from this year’s Oscars, according to social media:

    ‘Sinners’ wins are a virtue

Not only did the crowd erupt with applause every time “Sinners” won an award, but people on social media couldn’t contain their excitement.

Viewers were not only filled with joy after Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history by becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for best cinematography for “Sinners,” but also for the sweet moment when writer and director Ryan Coogler ran to the back of the theater to bring Arkapaw’s son closer to watch her speech.

Michael B. Jordan’s win had many viewers discussing how the actor should have received two awards due to his portrayal of both Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore. “Michael B. Jordan should get two identical twin Oscars,” wrote @teewatterss on Threads.

    K-Pop proves to be “Golden”

During EJAE, Audrey Nuna and REI AMI’s performance of “Golden,” viewers realized that the A-List nominees who made up the Dolby Theatre crowd had been given K-Pop glow orbs and instructed to hold them up during the musical number. “The idea of A-List stars and directors using light sticks is sending me,” wrote @cami.twomey on Threads.

An unexpected Oscars event: a tie

At first, viewers didn’t understand what was happening when Kumail Nanjiani told the audience the award for live-action short film was a tie. But when they found out the award would be going to the teams behind both “The Singers” and “Two People Exchanging Salvia,” excitement began to bubble online. “A tie has only happened three times in Oscar’s history INSANE,” wrote @laurenashleybeck on Threads.

‘Marty Supreme’ doesn’t serve it up as expected

Despite becoming a major topic of online discussion this week, “Marty Supreme” didn’t take home any Academy Awards. But the movie and Chalamet still got plenty of airtime as well as online discussion, as Timothée Chalamet’s comments about opera and ballet became a recurring theme of the night. Not only did the camera cut to him during after a joke during O’Brien’s opening monologue, but many noted how he was front and center for the “Sinners” performance, which featured legendary ballerina Misty Copeland.

In Memoriam segment hits close to home

This year’s In Memoriam segment paid homage to the creatives that the film industry lost this year. The traditional slideshow format was used, but the show also updated the format by having actors talk about the people we lost.

Billy Crystal paid tribute to the late Rob Reiner by highlighting the filmmaker’s many notable movies and impact on the industry. He also highlighted the advocacy work that Reiner did with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, for marriage equality.

Rachel McAdams remembered both Catherine O’Hara and Diane Keaton. Keaton and McAdams starred alongside each other in the 2005 film “The Family Stone,” and fans liked her recollections. “You know the episode of ‘Friends’ where Joey reads the book ‘Love You Forever,’ and everyone cries? That’s how I felt about Rachel McAdams reciting the lyrics to the Girl Scout song during her Diane Keaton tribute,” wrote @hineselise on Threads.

Barbra Streisand concluded the segment by paying homage to her “The Way We Were” co-star Robert Redford. “Theeeeee Barbara Streisand Coming out of Retirement to sing “The Way We Were…” I repeat Barbara Streisand sang “The Way We Were” to honor Robert Redford at tonight’s Oscars Ceremony… I’m not ok…😫😭😭😭😭😭,” wrote @missgolden_lady on Threads.

Upcoming movies have a moment to shine

Part of the fun of the Oscars is also finding creative ways to promote upcoming films.

One iconic moment came when Anna Wintour joined Anne Hathaway on stage to present the awards for best costume design and best makeup and hairstyling.

Hathaway asked Wintour if she’d like to read the nominees, to which Wintour responded: “Thank you, Emily,” a reference to the film “The Devil Wears Prada,” which was developed from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel that is understood to be inspired by her time working for Wintour at Vogue. The highly anticipated sequel premieres in theaters on May 1.

Another fun moment to tease an upcoming movie was when viewers noticed Grogu from “The Mandalorian” was seated in the Dolby Theatre crowd. The character first won over fans of the series in 2019 when it became known as “Baby Yoda.” The success of Disney+ show has led to a theatrical release of “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which will hit theaters on May 22.
