University boys soccer wins state Division IV title in dramatic fashion
    • March 14, 2026

The University boys soccer team survived a frantic finish by Del Mar to win the CIF State Division IV championship with a 3-2 victory Friday at Natomas High School in Sacramento.

The Trojans were in control of the game after scoring two first-half goals and then added an insurance goal late in the second half for a 3-0 lead.

But the game turned dramatically in the final five minutes, as Del Mar scored two quick goals to make it 3-2.

The Trojans, though, held off Del Mar the rest of the way, and the players celebrated by raising the state title.

“Longest three minutes of my life,” University coach Martin Wallwork said of the ending to the Bay Area News Group.

University scored on a header by Cole Barkett off a corner kick in the 16th minute.

The Trojans’ Jake Rabold finished off a rebound late in the half to make it 2-0.

University (19-5-1) added a late insurance goal when Brendan Leung pursued a loose ball on the counterattack and beat Kahn to it, slotting in a roller off the right post in the 73rd.

With the score 3-2, Del Mar drew a foul with 11.6 seconds remaining in the game, setting up one final free kick. The Dons sent up all 11 players, including goalkeeper Alex Kahn, for the cross.

But the ball served in was caught by University’s goalie, and the ensuing punt far down the field ran out the clock.
