    Shohei Ohtani sharp in spring pitching debut as Dodgers beat Giants

    THE GAME: Shohei Ohtani allowed one hit in 4⅓ innings in his spring pitching debut and the Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants, 5-1, in a Cactus League game on Wednesday afternoon at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz. The game was called after eight innings due to the excessive heat. Temperatures topped 100 degrees during the afternoon.

    PITCHING REPORT: Ohtani pitched into the fifth inning, retiring one batter before coming out of the game. In 4⅓ innings, he allowed one hit, walked two and hit a batter while striking out four. He threw 61 pitches and his fastball topped out at 99.9 mph. … Edgardo Henriquez, Blake Treinen, Alex Vesia and Will Klein followed Ohtani with a combined 2⅔ scoreless innings with just one hit allowed. … Tanner Scott gave up the Giants’ only run on a home run to Victor Bericoto.

    HITTING REPORT: Freddie Freeman was 2 for 3 with his first home run of the spring. Freeman is 12 for 28 this spring. … Mookie Betts was 1 for 2 with a walk and an RBI single. Betts is 7 for 23 this spring. … Ohtani did not hit in Wednesday’s game. He is scheduled to DH against the San Diego Padres on Friday.
