Angels have an off day, lose Farris-Buehler matchup to Padres
    • March 11, 2026

THE GAME: The Angels lost to the Padres, 10-2, at Tempe Diablo Stadium on Tuesday, with the pitching matchup – the Angels’ Mitch Farris vs. the Padres’ Walker Buehler – drawing references to the classic 1980s teen comedy. “I’ve seen the movie, but I didn’t put two and two together,” Farris said with a smile. “I was kind of focused on the game.”

PITCHING REPORT: Farris gave up seven runs in 3⅔ innings. Farris has opened eyes this spring by adding 3 mph to his fastball, to go with his excellent changeup. In the first three innings, he had allowed two runs and had already induced 10 whiffs. He acknowledged he was getting fatigued by the end of the outing. The grand slam came on his 64th and final pitch. “I thought the game went a lot better than what the box score showed,” Farris said. “A lot of stuff, like process-oriented stuff, that went well. Just gotta put it together and give the team a chance to win at the end of the day.” … Right-hander Walbert Ureña gave up one run in two innings. … Right-hander Ryan Zeferjahn pitched a scoreless inning. Zeferjahn picked a runner off second.

HITTING REPORT: Logan O’Hoppe singled on a 105 mph line drive to center, raising his batting average to .296 (8 for 27) this spring. He’s also struck out just six times in 31 plate appearances (19%). He struck out 31% of the time last season. … Jo Adell burned the Angels’ final ABS challenge in the third inning on an 0-and-1 pitch. With two runners on and a pitch that barely nipped the zone, it was likely worth the gamble. Even though Adell lost the challenge, he followed with a game-tying RBI single. He was then thrown out trying to steal second base, stranding a runner at third. … Chris Taylor tripled into the gap in left center and scored on a Nick Madrigal hit. Both players are non-roster invitees fighting for jobs. Taylor is hitting .192 (5 for 26) and Madrigal is hitting .333 (7 for 21) this spring. … Mike Trout went hitless in three at-bats, dropping to .208 (5 for 24) this spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: Third baseman Jeimer Candelario made a diving stop of a ground ball down the line, but his throw was too late for the out at first. … Shortstop Zach Neto fielded a ball in the hole and then bobbled it. It was ruled a hit. … Adell raced in to make a sliding catch in left field. … Trout had another uneventful day in center field. He’s made five of his six defensive starts in center, with the other in left. … Third baseman Donovan Walton made a nice play on a hopper down the line.

UP NEXT: Angels (RHP Alex Manoah) at White Sox (LHP Anthony Kay) at Camelback Ranch, Wednesday, 1:05 p.m. PT
