    Girls soccer playoffs: Segerstrom, Santa Margarita advance on penalty kicks

    Segerstrom freshman Isabella Barrera scored late in regulation to force overtime and the Jaguars’ girls soccer team beat top-seeded Birmingham in penalty kicks in a Division IV first-round match in the CIF Southern California Regional on Tuesday.

    After regulation ended in a 1-1 deadlock, visiting Segerstrom received goals in penalty kicks from Jewel Orellana, Aymar Salgado, Dominique Becerra and Danielle Dominguez to defeat the Division I champion from the LA City Section 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

    Dominguez netted the winner.

    Segerstrom coach Diego Aguirre called freshman goalie Isabel Valdivia the Jaguars’ “player of the game.”

    In the semifinals Thursday, Segerstrom plays at Coachella Valley.

    The Jaguars claimed their first CIF-SS title by defeating Ocean View 4-0 in the Division 6 final. Coachella Valley won Division 5.

    In Division I:

    Santa Margarita 2, Roosevelt 2 (penalty kicks): Sophomore goalie Kaitlin Crossett made three saves in penalty kicks as the CIF-SS Open Division champion defeated the section’s Division 1 champion. The top-seeded Eagles received goals in penalty kicks from sophomores Winter Meskiel, Lauren Lim and Riley Neves to advance to the semifinals Thursday against Cleveland of the LA City Section.

    Neves netted the winning penalty kick and also scored in regulation. Santa Margarita’s other strike in regulation came from Felicity Nguyen, a junior committed to Texas A & M.

    Cleveland captured the Open Division title in the LA City Section.

    Mater Dei 5, San Marcos 0: Sophomore Kendra Hansen scored twice to lead the host Monarchs, who advanced to the semifinals against Oaks Christian on Thursday.

    No. 2 seeded Mater Dei also received a goal and two assists from Valentina Labuschagne as they defeated the Open Division runner-up from San Diego Section.

    Suna Roberts and Bonnie Earl each added one goal.
