    Thermos recalls millions of food, beverage bottles over flawed stopper

    Thermos is recalling more than 8 million of its insulated food jars and beverage bottles because gas expansion within the containers can force a lid stopper to pop explosively.

    The April 30 recall includes 5.8 million Stainless King food jars and about 2.3 million Sportsman food and beverage bottles.

    From the recall notice, the company writes: “If perishable food or beverages are stored in the container for an extended period of time, the stopper can forcefully eject when opened, which can result in serious impact injury and laceration hazards to the consumer.”

    The company said it has received 27 reports of injuries from consumers who were struck by a stopper. The complaints included impact and laceration injuries that required medical attention.

    Three consumers suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye by the stopper.

    The bottles were sold at Target, Walmart and other stores nationwide and online at popular e-commerce websites between March 2008 and July 2024. Prices were roughly $30.

    Thermos said consumers who own the bottles or jars should stop using them immediately. The company will send a free replacement pressure relief stopper or replacement bottle, depending on the model.

    The models include:

    —Thermos Stainless King 3000

    —3020 Food Jars

    —Thermos Sportsman 3010 Food & Beverage Bottles

    For recalled 3000 and 3020 food jars, consumers should take a photo of the stopper and send it to Thermos before throwing out the defective part. For recalled 3010 bottles, consumers will return them to Thermos using a prepaid shipping label.
