    Softball roundup: El Modena, JSerra collect critical league victories

    Ashley Driskill pitched a two-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead El Modena’s softball team past host Cypress 2-0 on Tuesday and into sole possession of first place in the Crestview League.

    El Modena (14-12, 6-4) won its third consecutive game in the league to open a half-a-game lead on La Habra (18-7, 6-5), which beat Pacifica 7-1 in another game.

    Driskill, who is committed to the University of San Diego, walked one in outdueling Chach Stamper of Cypress. Stamper allowed one earned run and five hits. She had two strikeouts and one walk.

    Driskill’s battery mate Parker Mayes went 2 for 3 with a RBI.

    El Modena played without third baseman Kylie Tafua (lower back), Vanguards coach Bobby Calderon said.

    On Wednesday, El Modena plays host to Canyon (15-10, 3-6).

    In the Trinity League:

    JSerra 5, Santa Margarita 2: Florida commit Liliana Escobar allowed two runs on four hits and struck out 14 to lead the host Lions (19-7, 4-3), who moved within one game of first place Orange Lutheran (18-7, 5-2).

    Freshman Ava Born had a three-run double to highlight JSerra’s four-run sixth inning.

    Mater Dei 6, Orange Lutheran 5: The visiting Monarchs (13-11, 2-5) scored once in the sixth to snap a 5-5 tie and their four-game losing streak in league.

    Cate Medvitz and Malia Munoz hit home runs for Orange Lutheran (18-7, 5-2), which plays at JSerra on Friday.
