    • April 14, 2026

Rory Schoonmaker is the new football head coach at Los Alamitos, the school announced Tuesday.

Schoonmaker, 40, was the coach at El Segundo High the past two seasons after serving as the head coach at Santa Ana High for one season.

He replaces Ray Fenton at Los Alamitos, which won the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship this past season. Fenton left Los Alamitos to accept the head coaching position at Orange Lutheran.

“This job’s been open only once in my lifetime,” Schoonmaker said. “I had to take a shot at it.”

John Barnes served as Los Alamitos’ head coach from 1979 to 2015 and Fenton had been the coach since Barnes’ departure.

Schoonmaker was an assistant coach at Santa Ana for six seasons before being promoted to head coach. Schoonmaker also has worked as an assistant coach at Santa Ana College and Canyon.

He played football at Huntington Beach High, then at Santa Ana College and Graceland College in Iowa.

“Ever since I played played high school football and playing in the Sunset League, Los Alamitos has always been the pinnacle of high school football,” Schoonmaker said.

El Segundo this past season finished 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Ocean League. The Eagles lost to Calabasas, 31-24, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs.

In the fall, the Alpha League grows from being a four-team league the past two seasons to a six-team league. The league’s teams are Edison, Los Alamitos, Mission Viejo, San Clemente, San Juan Hills and Yorba Linda.
