Los Alamitos baseball comes through in 10th inning to beat Wilson
    • April 12, 2026

LONG BEACH – With the game tied in extra innings, Los Alamitos baseball broke through with three runs in the 10th inning for a 5-2 win over Long Beach Wilson in a nonleague game Saturday.

It was a much-needed victory for the Griffins (6-13), who were on a 10-game losing streak that included six forfeited games due to playing an ineligible player.

Before Los Alamitos was able to break the tie in the 10th inning, it had to escape a rally by Wilson (11-8) in the ninth inning. Right-handed pitcher Logan Anderson, in his fourth inning of relief for the Griffins, loaded the bases with two walks and a fielder’s choice and two outs.

With the winning run for Wilson 90 feet from home plate, Anderson was able to get out of the jam, as he got Aiden Blunt to fly out to right field to end the inning with the game tied 2-2.

The Griffins then scored in the 10th inning against left-hander Shane Guy, who had also been pitching well going into his fourth inning of relief.

After a one-out double from leadoff hitter Cruz D’Errico and a walk to Jackson Gomes, Rowan Shelley ripped an RBI double to left field to plate D’Errico and give Los Alamitos a 3-2 lead with only one out.

Guy intentionally walked the next hitter, Gerardo Garfiaz, to load the bases. He then surrendered an RBI single to Los Alamitos backup catcher Easton Kaesman to bring home Gomes and chase Guy from the game.

Eddie Becker came in from center field to pitch the rest of the 10th. He walked Garran Beanum to bring in another run and give the Griffins a 5-2 lead.

Anderson was sent out to finish the job for Los Alamitos and pitch his fifth inning of relief. He surrendered two hits in the inning, a single by Penn Peters and a double by Cade Miller, but he also struck out Guy and got Cesar Castro to fly out to right to center field to end the game.

The game lasted three hours and 30 minutes.

Shelley finished 2 for 4 with a single, a double, a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored.

“It kind of started with our team,” Shelley said about his at-bat in the 10th inning. “Guys got on before me. I was able to come up with a chance to get the job done, and that’s exactly what I did. It’s belief in our guys. I know the next guy behind me is going to pick us up and with that comes confidence and today we were able to get the job done.”

Anderson, who pitched five scoreless relief innings, allowed no runs, two hits, two walks and had four strikeouts.

“I was only expecting to go one or two innings today, then we kept scoreless for five innings straight and then our defense held (up) great, made some good plays for me,” said Anderson. “I stayed very confident, and I knew I’m better than all of them.”

Los Alamitos coach Cameron Chinn said his team’s execution at the plate and in the field were the difference in the game.

“There (were) a lot of opportunities where if we don’t make a play, if we don’t make a pitch, they win this game in seven (innings),” said Chinn.

Chinn also commented on Anderson’s relief outing.

“He was very pitch efficient early on, he was getting some quick pitch innings, established his fastball really well, which is great,” said Chinn. “There was a long time in that 10th inning that took a while. He sat, we had him go throw a little bit, and I think the adrenaline level was still up, so he had trouble throwing downhill. But he calmed down and he did what he’s capable of doing, which is throwing strikes and he’s got great stuff.”

Wilson was carried in this game by their pitching staff as Cooper George, James Mirabile, Guy, and Becker all pitched well enough to give their team a chance to win, but the offense struggled to deliver a clutch hit in the later innings.

Wilson coach Andy Hall said the Griffins were better overall in the key moments of the game.

“They out-grinded us today more than anything,” said Hall. “We had several chances to put runs on the board…It’s a hard game, you have to be ready to make plays and get hits when we need them.”

George went 1 for 4 with an RBI and also pitched well as the starting pitcher with six strikeouts through four innings. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk.

Mirabile went 2 for 4 at the plate with a walk and a run scored as the leadoff man. He also pitched two innings, allowed one run on two hits and two walks.
