Orange County boys golf showed its strength at the recent Champions Invitational in Palm Springs.

Santa Margarita’s undefeated boys captured the team championship by five strokes and Mater Dei’s Brayden Jones claimed the individual title to highlight play at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort.

Santa Margarita finished the three-round tournament with an 11-under-par score of 845 to outdistance Oceanside Collegiate Academy of South Carolina at 850.

Servite tied for sixth at 859.

Santa Margarita was led by freshman Dylan Zhang and sophomore Anthony Wu, who tied for fourth and eighth, respectively, to make the all-tournament team.

Santa Margarita won the tournament for the first time since its back-to-back crowns in 2011 and 2012 with future professional Beau Hossler.

“I’m very proud of our team,” Santa Margarita coach Jim Tinker said. “Considering that we were behind by 10 strokes starting the final 18 holes, the team responded by shooting 6-under-par to win the tournament by five strokes. It was a great effort by the entire team.”

The Eagles’ roster also included Alex Sheehan (49th), Daniel He (77th) and Ryan Hang (103rd).

Santa Margarita is 10-0 in match play, including 5-0 in the Trinity League. The Eagles earlier won the Ayala tournament.

Jones, the reigning O.C. Register player of the year, carded a 14-under-par 200 over three rounds to top runner-up Junlin Pan of Orange Lutheran by three strokes.

Jones, a junior who is committed to Arizona State, became the first Orange County player to win the tournament since Edison’s Timothy Jung in 2022.

Jones won the individual title at the Ayala tournament.

Sunny Hills’ Cole Kim tied for sixth to join the all-tournament team with Jones, Pan, Zhang and Wu.
