Jo Adell takes away 3 homers in Angels’ win over Mariners
    • April 5, 2026

ANAHEIM — The Angels pulled out a 1-0 victory on Friday night because of their goaltending.

Like a goalie in soccer or hockey, single-handedly preventing scoring, Angels right fielder Jo Adell robbed the Seattle Mariners of three homers.

    Three.

He soared over the fence to steal one from Cal Raleigh in the first inning, and then he did it again to Josh Naylor in the eighth. After the second of the two practically identical catches, Adell pounded his fist to celebrate.

And then in the ninth, he flung himself over the short right field wall just inside the pole, making another catch to rob J.P. Crawford. He fell into the stands after making the catch. It was reviewed, but the call was upheld.

Meanwhile, the Angels’ only run came when Zach Neto hit one 443 feet in the first inning, well beyond the range of any outfielder. It was the second-longest homer of his career.

Adell made the most spectacular of several defensive plays that supported the pitching of starter Jack Kochanowicz, who worked 5⅔ innings.

In the fourth, left fielder Josh Lowe made a diving grab. Second baseman Oswald Peraza dove to snag a grounder to start the fifth inning.

The Angels (4-5) won a game with pitching and defense, because their bats have been quiet for the last five games. They’ve scored only eight runs in those games.

It’s not a sustainable recipe, but the Angels will take it for now.

The pitching began with Kochanowicz, who looked more like the pitcher who won a rotation spot in spring training than the one who was roughed up in his season-opening start last weekend.

It was the fourth time in the Angels’ first nine games that a starter had not allowed a run. José Soriano did it twice, and Reid Detmers did it on Friday night.

Kochanowicz struck out seven, which was one shy of his career high. He got 12 swings and misses, which was also one short of his career high.

Seven of those whiffs came on Kochanowicz’s changeup, which he did not throw effectively last season. Opponents hit .319 against the pitch.

After issuing five walks in Houston, Kochanowicz walked just two. Both of them were in the third inning, when he faced his toughest jam. The Mariners loaded the bases with two outs, but Kochanowicz got Randy Arozarena to ground out harmlessly to third.

With two outs in the sixth, manager Kurt Suzuki figured he’d pressed his luck enough with the right-handed Kochanowicz against the Mariners’ lefty-filled lineup.

Left-hander Joey Lucchesi got out of the sixth. He issued a walk and hit a batter to start the seventh, though, which brought Suzuki out of the dugout to go to the pitcher he’s preferred for getting out of jams so far this season.

Right-hander Chase Silseth struck out Leo Rivas and Luke Raley. After a visit from catcher Logan O’Hoppe to go over the plan for Cal Raleigh, Silseth got him on a 3-and-2 groundout.

In the eighth, right-hander Sam Bachman was on the mound when Adell made his second sensational catch of the night. Left-hander Drew Pomeranz recorded the final out of the inning.

Right-hander Jordan Romano then worked the ninth, picking up his third save in three tries. He has not allowed a run yet.

More to come on this story.
