Carew Classic roundup: Orange Lutheran, Fullerton reach the semifinals
    • April 4, 2026

The Orange Lutheran softball team put on a clinic in situational hitting and got an outstanding outing from pitcher Rylee Silva in a 3-0 victory over Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals of the Michelle Carew Classic on Friday at Peralta Park.

The Lancers will play Norco in the semifinals Saturday at 1:15 p.m. at Peralta Park.

Sierra Nichols was hit by a pitch to lead off the first inning for the Lancers (10-3), the fifth-ranked team in Orange County. Nichols reached third on an error later in the inning and scored on a ground out from Mia Scott.

In the third, after Scott was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Melia Munoz singled to put runners on first and second.

Snyder moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and then Scott scored from third on a groundout from Malia Smith.

Silva then helped her own cause by singling home Munoz to give the Lancers their third run.

“Some nice sacrifices,” Orange Lutheran coach Steve Miklos said. “We executed well. When you play a good team like Los Alamitos, you can’t make mistakes. You’ve got to execute and we did that today.”

In the circle, Silva scattered five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The sophomore right-hander gave up singles in the first and fourth and then back-to-back singles with two outs in the fifth – the only time the ninth-ranked Griffins (11-8) had two runners on base.

She gave up a single to start the sixth and then retired the next six hitters to complete the shutout.

She just has that “it” factor,” Miklos said. “She wants the ball and she is in charge.”

Faith Pulsifer pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Griffins.

    In the other quarterfinals:

Norco 2, Canyon 1 (10 innings): Canyon pitcher Kelsey Perez pitched nine scoreless innings for the Comanches (11-6), who took a 1-0 lead in the top of the10th when Allie Erkkamp scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Gianna Alcala.

Norco tied the score on an error with two outs the bottom of the inning and then Kendra Nelson then singled home the winning run from second to give the Cougars the walk-off victory.

Perez allowed four hits with seven strikeouts and both of the runs she gave up were unearned.

With the tiebreaker rule in effect during extra innings, both teams started with a runner on second base to start the eighth and then a runner on third base to start the ninth and every subsequent inning.

Fullerton 1, Mater Dei of Chula Vista 0: Fullerton’s Hayley Brock drove in the game’s only run and Kaylee Mathews threw seven scoreless innings in the Indians’ 1-0 victory over Mater Dei of Chula Vista in the quarterfinals at Peralta Park.

The Indians (15-1), ranked No. 1 in Orange County, will play Ganesha in the semifinals Saturday at 1:15 p,m. at Peralta Park.

Brock, a Utah Valley signee, doubled with no outs in the fifth to drive in Melia Vera who walked to lead off the inning.

Through three games of the tournament, Brock has eight hits, with two doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs.

“I came in this season thinking, why not,” Brock said. “It’s my senior season. We were Division 1 last year and got eliminated in the first round. So, the whole thing I’ve been trying to spread is to play with a chip on your shoulder.”

Mathews, who has been pitching with an injured right ankle, allowed one hit with five strikeouts and three walks.

Two batters also reached base on errors for Mater Dei.

“I’ve been in pain this whole tournament,” Mathews said. “I just had to power through it to get through the game. I still want to pitch.”
