St. John Bosco baseball falls to Orange Lutheran in Trinity League series finale
    • April 3, 2026

BELLFLOWER — The standard for the St. John Bosco baseball team is so high that the players are not satisfied with winning 2 out of 3 Trinity League games against the nation’s No. 2-ranked team.

Bosco led early courtesy of a two-run triple by senior infielder/pitcher Jack Champlin in the first inning.

“It was huge for the team,” Champlin said. “We really needed those runs facing a really good arm.”

However, the Braves could not rally late, scoring one run in the sixth but losing 5-4 at home against Orange Lutheran in the final game of a three-game series Thursday.

“We still had a chance at the end, it just didn’t work out,” St. John Bosco coach Andy Rojo said.

Bosco senior first baseman Moises Razo, who signed with Long Beach State, drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning. Braves senior outfielder Jhett Ohira, who signed with USC, beat out the throw to first, which put runners on first and third with one out.

Sophomore catcher Richie Avina’s potential game-tying RBI double scored Razo, but Ohira was tagged out at home plate. Bosco trailed 5-4.

Orange Lutheran junior pitcher Anthony Tomminelli saved the game with a 1, 2, 3 seventh inning, including striking out UCLA signee Jaden Jackson to secure the victory.

St. John Bosco dropped to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the Trinity League. The Braves, who are seeking consecutive league titles, are still in sole possession of first place over second-place Servite.

Bosco won the first two games on the road on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“We put ourselves in the driver’s seat for the Trinity League (title),” Champlin said. “We’re just going to go out there, and chase wins in the Trinity League and try and go get it done.”

Bosco’s leadoff hitter, senior shortstop James Clark, who is committed to Duke, had two singles.

“Even in these losses, you learn quite a bit from your own ball club,” Rojo explained.

Orange Lutheran improved to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in the Trinity League.

“What we preach every day is every game matters,” Orange Lutheran coach RJ Farrell said.

Senior catcher Brady Murrietta, a four-year starter, powered the Lancers with a go-ahead 2-run home run in the sixth inning. The Lancers took a 5-3 lead.

“It was definitely a momentum shifter in the game,” said Murrietta who finished 2 for 2 at the plate with a double, a home run and three RBIs.

Murrietta also drew a walk and scored in the third inning to cut Bosco’s lead to 2-1. The Texas signee also hit an RBI sacrifice fly, which cut Bosco’s lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning.

“It’s the expectation for him to lead the clubhouse and do what we do,” Farrell continued. “It’s on him. The other seniors we have, they’re all just falling in line, and our younger guys are doing the same thing.”

Orange Lutheran senior pitcher Cooper Sides, who is an MLB Draft prospect and LSU commit, picked up the win. Sides threw five innings and allowed five hits, three runs and one walk. He struck out eight batters.

“I’m more proud of my boys for fighting through these past couple of days, getting to this game,” Murrietta said. “I wouldn’t be in the position to hit that home run if the boys in front of me didn’t do their job.”

St. John Bosco will return to action when they play Norco in its first game of the Boras Classic at Mater Dei on Tuesday, April 7.

Orange Lutheran will play Fountain Valley in its first game of the Boras Classic at JSerra on April 7.
