LA MIRADA — Orange Lutheran’s softball team appears to be playing its best at the right time.

With about 2 1/2 weeks left in the regular season, the Lancers delivered a well-rounded effort to capture the La Mirada Classic by cooling off the host Matadores 13-3 in a mercy-rule shortened final Saturday night at Jennie Finch Field.

Freshman Rylee Silva pitched six solid innings while Cate Medvitz and Chloe McGreevey hit home runs as the Lancers (20-3) snapped La Mirada’s 15-game winning streak.

Two weeks ago, Orange Lutheran avenged an earlier loss against Norco en route to a runner-up finish in the Michelle Carew Classic.

“We’re peaking at the right time,” Orange Lutheran coach Steve Miklos said. “We had two really good games today. We’ve taken it to some teams. (We’re) swinging (the bats), and throughout the lineup. We’re scoring.”

“For us, it’s good to see a good quality team to get us ready for playoffs,” the coach added. “You don’t want to be peaking in February. You got to be improving and I think we’ve been doing that.”

Orange Lutheran, ranked second in Orange County, beat South Hills 14-4 in a five-inning game earlier Saturday.

On Tuesday, the Lancers handled Mater Dei 7-0 to open a two-game lead in the Trinity League.

For a team with championship aspirations in CIF-SS Division 1, the results have been impressive.

“Just win it all,” Orange Lutheran center fielder Kai Minor said of her team’s goal for the playoffs. “It’s a good time (to play well) because we’re starting to wrap up league, and going to CIF, we want to be in a good place. This sets the tone.”

Medvitz sparked Orange Lutheran’s 11-hit attack against La Mirada (20-4). Batting cleanup in the order, the left-handed hitting catcher drove in Minor and Sierra Nichols with a single in the first inning.

One inning later, No. 9 batter Olivia Oskorus tripled down the left field line with two outs. Nichols followed with a RBI single and Madelyn Armendariz added a two-run double to push the lead to 5-0.

In the fourth, Minor laced an RBI double before Medvitz launched a two-run home run for an 8-0 advantage. Medvitz also homered against South Hills.

Minor, an Oklahoma bound senior, finished 3 for 3 and scored three runs en route to earning tournament MVP.

McGreevey, who batted seventh, hit a grand slam to highlight a five-run sixth.

Silva (12-2) scattered six hits, including solo home runs to college-bound seniors Amanda Urbina (Oregon) and Angelyna Conde (Texas Tech). La Mirada’s powerful lineup was missing at least two starters but Silva struck out four and walked none.

“She’s doing really good,” Medvitz said of Silva. “She’s been working on her spin because she’s had that speed. She’s hitting max speed and she’s also working on spin.”

“She’s got that moxie,” La Mirada coach Brent Tuttle said of Silva. “That kid threw hard today. She threw harder today than she did in Bullhead.”

Orange Lutheran edged La Mirada 5-4 in the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in March.
