Deadline to get a Real ID is coming, do you have what you need?
    • April 22, 2025

Do you have your Real ID yet?

Over 18 million Californians have a Real ID, and if you want to board a flight in the United States come May 7, the federal enforcement date, you’ll need one too. Americans will need a Real ID or other federally approved document to board flights within the United States and access secure federal facilities like federal courthouses and military bases.

Here’s a refresher: Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 on the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission that established minimum security standards for state-issued drivers licenses and identification cards. A Real ID is intended to make licenses and ID cards more accurate and reliable, and make it harder for terrorists to evade being caught by using fraudulent identification. More information from the Department of Homeland Security can be found at dhs.gov/real-id.

Californians who do not have a Real ID but hold a valid passport can wait to convert to a Real ID when their driver’s license is due for renewal, the DMV said. There also are other forms of accepted identification people can use to pass the TSA security checkpoints at airports, such as a military ID, valid passport or valid passport card.

To apply for a Real ID, visit RealID.dmv.ca.gov to see the document requirements, fill out the online application, and upload your documents. You will have to bring the required documents to a DMV office:

    • Proof of identity: One original or certified document, like a valid passport or passport card, valid permanent resident card, or birth certificate.

    • Two separate documents proving California residency: two different, printed, paper copy documents to prove you live in California. Both documents must show your first and last name with the same mailing address listed on your Real ID application. Examples include a home utility bill, a cell phone bill, a mortgage bill, your tax return, your property tax bill or statement, or a rental or lease agreement with the signature of the owner/landlord and the tenant/resident.

    • Proof of your Social Security number: A Social Security card, W-2 form or a paystub with the full Social Security number on it.

    Zebra stripe crosswalks

Q: Caltrans has finally put the finishing touches on its Highway 74 project through Hemet, also known as Florida Avenue, said Ted Petrich of Hemet. The new crosswalks are painted in the “zebra stripe” model, he said. He asked why some of the crosswalks are painted in white paint while others are painted yellow.

“At first I thought it might have something to do with nearby schools, but that theory doesn’t seem to be consistent with what I’ve seen,” Petrich said.

A: In general, the use of yellow striping for crosswalks near schools is required under the California Vehicle Code 21368, said Caltrans spokesperson Eric Dionne.

“Different criteria have to be met as described in the code mentioned above,” he said. The “zebra striping is an enhancement to basic crosswalk markings with safety enhancements” planned as part of the agency’s strategic plan to “reduce incidents.”
