Newport Beach police say the motorcyclist killed by an officer during a traffic stop on Thursday, April 17, assaulted the officer, took the officer’s Taser and attempted to use it on the officer multiple times.

The motorcyclist, 45-year-old Geoffrey Shyam Stirling of Laguna Niguel, was stopped by police for an undisclosed traffic violation on Coast Highway between Superior Avenue and Hoag Hospital around 9:15 p.m.

During the stop, he became uncooperative and assaulted the officer and took the Taser from the officer’s duty belt and tried to use it on the officer multiple times, police said, before the suspect was fatally shot.

A man with the same name was scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday, April 21, concerning a felony arson-of-property charge, according to Orange County court records.

The California Department of Justice is independently investigating the shooting.

The Newport Beach Police Department asked that anyone with information regarding the case to contact it at 949-644-3681 or specifically Detective K. Markwald at [email protected].
